Knee Osteoarthritis & Acupuncture

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a common disabling condition.  There is a growing amount of evidence to support acupuncture as a complimentary or alternative treatment for knee osteoarthritis.

As our population continues to age, seniors are looking for more ways to keep them active and healthy.  Seniors enjoy partaking in a variety of sports and recreation (golf, tennis, hiking, cycling, running, etc.).  More people are turning to acupuncture for help.  Some are looking for pain relief, other wanting to delay or avoid surgery, while some are looking for prevention.

The following study concluded that Acupuncture provides improvements in function and pain relief for those with osteoarthritis of the knee when compared with education or sham treatment.

*Effectiveness of acupuncture as adjunctive therapy in osteoarthritis of the knee: a randomized, controlled trial.  Ann Intern Med. 2004 Dec 21;141(12):901-10.

Spinal Manipulation - The Audible Pop -

High velocity, low amplitude (HVLA) manipulation, also referred to as spinal manipulation or the chiropractic adjustment are known to be an effective treatment for lower back pain.  The audible pop commonly heard with an "adjustment" does not always occur during the procedure.  Many patients become to expect this sound and sometime will equate it to the effective of the treatment.

The following study revealed that the effectiveness of spinal manipulation is not dependent on the audible pop.  HVLA spinal manipulation can still achieve both a mechanical and neurological response independent to whether an audible pop is heard.

In conclusion, spinal manipulation regardless of whether an audible pop occurs remains to be an effective treatment options for those that suffer from spine pain.

*The relationship of the audible pop to hypoalgesia associated with high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust manipulation: a secondary analysis of an experimental study in pain-free participants.  Bialosky JE, Bishop MD, Robinson ME, George SZ.  Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics 2010; 33: 117-124.
