   2009 Newsletter  - Summer Issue -

Words from the editor

It's been a long wait, and I believe some of us are still waiting but I think (?) we can say that summer is officially here?  Bring on the heat!!!

Nonetheless, it's a great time of year for a variety of reasons.  And for all you exercise enthusiasts the low humidity levels combined with the cooler than normal temperatures could be viewed as somewhat of a blessing.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is not simply the "gliding" of heated stones lightly upon the surface of the skin, but rather the stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at a pressure level comfortable to the client.

The heat from the stones relaxes muscles, increase the blood flow to the area being worked on which further accelerates the healing process. This increase in circulation and the relaxation of the muscles also aids in mental relaxation, pain relief, and a general sense of well-being.

Diagnostic Imaging Part 1

FAQ's - Do I need a plain film x-ray?

Typically x-rays are ordered at the discretion of your primary health care provider (physician, chiropractor, etc.) and will often be based on your case history and on the best current available research.  Regardless, many are still somewhat confused and have questions as to whether their condition, injury, pain, etc. would require an x-ray.  The following will provide an overview for those individuals.

Typically x-rays may be indicated within the first 30 days of injury if one of the following is present:

  • Fever greater than 100 degrees that persists for longer than 48 hours

  • Unrelenting night pain or pain at rest

  • Aberrant pain, paresthesia, or numbness

  • Motor deficit

  • Progressive neurological deficit

  • Significant trauma

  • Suspicion of fracture

  • Suspicion of progressive disease (i.e., osteopenia, osteoporosis, ankylosing spondylitis, metabolic disease, scoliosis)

  • Drug or alcohol abuse

  • Chronic use of steroids

  • Age over 50

  • History of chronic pain in the same body part

  • Previous spinal surgery to same body area

  • Unexplained weight loss or changes in bowel/bladder function

Routine use of x-ray or other forms of diagnostic imaging as a screening tool for musculoskeletal injuries are not often recommended and will expose patients to unnecessary risks.

In order for an x-ray to be deemed clinically necessary the results should provide you with valuable diagnostic information (fracture site, severe degenerative joint disease, tumor, infection, etc.).

Additionally, the information should provide valuable information that will aid your practitioner in terms of formulating a treatment plan or guiding further diagnostic testing (diagnostic ultrasound, nerve conduction studies, MRI, CT Scan, etc.). Otherwise, the use of an x-ray will be of little clinical value for both the practitioner and patient.

In a subsequent issue we will be discussing - CT SCAN's

Pomegranate Juice Proven To Slow Prostate Cancer

Two clinical studies have now shown that men with established prostate cancer realized a marked slowing of their disease when they drank 8 ounces of pure pomegranate juice each day.

Reporting at the 104th Annual Meeting Scientific Meeting of The American Urology Association, researchers presented findings showing that men, who had undergone prostate surgery or radiation treatment for localized prostate cancer, benefited from drinking 8 ounces per day of pomegranate juice if their PSA levels were still continuing to rise.

A note from our editor:  more research is needed to confirm the above results.  However, it may be one more reason for you to continue to eat your daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

How lying flat on your back can be therapeutically refreshing and restorative

Many individuals are plagued with excessive neck, shoulder, and upper back discomfort.  Simply by lying flat on your back in a neutral posture you will enjoy a reduction in muscular tension, reduced joint stiffness, and with practice improved upright posture.

The following link will provide you with a step by step or how to guide with detailed instructions.  Please note that props such as blankets, bolsters, straps, etc. are helpful but are not mandatory.  Additionally, proper form is always paramount but the simple act of lying flat on your back with gravity forcing your body down will be quite therapeutic in itself.

Doctor's Tip

Just Do it!!!

Many of us inherently know that we need to eat better, exercise more, and take better overall care of ourselves.  Well, what's stopping you.  Yup, I here excuse after excuse;

  • I got no time

  • I'm too busy

  • It's too hard

Well, it's going to be a lot harder when you're sitting in a hospital bed with Type II Diabetes and the Doctors are trying to decide whether or not they will have to amputate your leg!  Seems extreme but it's closer to home then you may think.

3 simple things that can make a huge difference in just about anyone's life;

  1. Eat Right

  2. Exercise Right

  3. Get Adequate Rest

Just Do it!!!

Indeed, there are those of you that will require some guidance and support.  You know who you are, those of you who think that French Fries and Ketchup are a well balanced meal and those that feel that surfing the net is a metabolically stimulating activity will likely require a little education!   All kidding aside, there are professionals that are trained and willing to help (chiropractors, trainers, nutritionists, naturopaths, life coaches, educators, etc.).  Have them help you set a few goals and ultimately devise a master plan.  Make sure the plan is realistic and sustainable over the long term.  Additionally, make sure you have a few markers in order to monitory your success (fitness tests, body composition measurements, laboratory analyses, lifestyle questionnaires, etc.).  Simply start making small steps in the right direction each and every day and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish.

Stop making excuses and Just Do It!  It doesn't have to be complicated, simply by adding a five minute morning walk and consuming a fresh apple for breakfast instead of a Tim's Muffin is an excellent start.  Each week try to build on your healthy choices.

Start today and Take Action!
