Words from the editor

Wow, it's been one entire year since my last Newsletter.  You can say I had a little Siesta! Synergy is still alive and kicking and over the next few months we will be revealing some exciting new changes.

We've decided to continue with a quarterly / seasonal release for our ongoing newsletters.  Additionally, we will continue with provide periodic updates, news / health flashes and the occasional Friday Fun Facts throughout the year.

It's been another great winter but I'm sure many of you are looking forward to the sun, beach, water, etc.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is not simply the "gliding" of heated stones lightly upon the surface of the skin, but rather the stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at a pressure level comfortable to the client.

The heat from the stones relaxes muscles, increase the blood flow to the area being worked on which further accelerates the healing process. This increase in circulation and the relaxation of the muscles also aids in mental relaxation, pain relief, and a general sense of well-being.

Food for thought:

PARTY TRICK or FUNCTIONAL TRAINING?

A few questions I often ask myself before performing any exercise:

#1.  What is my intension or goal?

  • Do I want to become a better basketball player?

  • Do I want to reduce my risk of injury?

  • Do I want to improve my core stability?

#2.  What are the risks associated with the exercise?

  • Ankle sprain or fracture?

  • Concussion?

  • Shoulder dislocation or separation?

#3.  What are the benefits associated with the exercise?

  • Improved balance?

  • Improved stability?

#4.  Will the exercise carry over to my to my sport, hobby, job, or recreation?

  • Will balancing on a round ball improve my balance on the court?

#5.  Are there safer alternatives that will produce similar benefits?

  • If unstable training is indeed what you want to do, would it be safer and just as effective to balance on other objects: small balance disks, extreme boards, wobble or rocker board?

Since when are basketball courts round and dynamically move underneath you?  All kidding aside, I simply want people to think a little more about their training and exercise routine, consider the risks and benefits and always question what they are doing.  Why is a wonderful word, use it often.

Oftentimes there are alternative exercises that are just as effective while providing substantial less risk.  You are really no good to your team with a concussion, fractured ankle or broken collarbone.  Remember that many injuries  injuries happen in the gym and with training.

Just to set the record straight, I'm not against any particular exercise, training method, etc. everything likely has it's place.  Repetitive loaded full sit-ups are great money makers for orthopedic back surgeons!  Sorry, I just had to.  Just remember that one can never eliminate risk completely.  However, if we could simply help to minimize risk we may be able to help athletes, workers, etc. have longer healthier careers.

Happy Training,
Dr. Rene Asselin
